I never really cared about how to dress for success, and never even understood it.  Whenever I had a job that required me to dress professionally, I would do my best to fulfill those requirements, but would always seem to fail.  My suit would be rumpled, or my tie would not quite match my shirt.  Something would be too conservative, or not conservative enough.  In short, dressing well was beyond my ability.

Finally, I went to an image consultant.  I have always been a hard worker, and a good worker as well.  I am friendly, and can get along with almost anyone.  But still, no matter how hard I tried, it seemed like I could not get ahead in the office.  It seemed like I was getting passed over for promotions, and stagnating in my work.

Well, the image consultant took one look at me and told me that I needed to learn how to dress.  He took me step by step through every part of fashion accessorizing, wardrobe selection, personal grooming, and attitude.  It turns out that the reason that I didn’t know how to dress was because it was something that I had never considered myself. 

I was not interested in projecting the right professional image, and as a result I came across as a slob no matter what clothes I put on.   Understanding how to dress wasn’t so much a matter of selecting the right clothes as of having the right self image.  If I could project an image of confidence and self reliance, my knowledge of how to dress would naturally follow.  I would look good no matter what I was wearing.

Well, it did not work quite as well as he said, but he was right about the basic principles.  Now that I have embraced what he calls “clothing consciousness”, I have a more effective and artistic appearance and feel much better for it.

 I have watched people become more and more casual in the way they dress over the past ten years. It is amazing to me how little people think about what they are wearing. Every time I put on my college throwback football jersey, I am reminded of some of the very best days of my life.  It is, of course, an authentic football jersey.  Let me tell you that I do not watch college sports much anymore. 

I have, of course, an NFL football jersey for my favorite team, the Raiders, and they do wear it for every single one of their games.  But there’s something about authentic football jerseys from back in the day that really make the memories start to flow.  It was one of the best times of my life, and it is nice to have an article of clothing that really takes me back to it. 

I can put on my authentic football jersey, and it is like I am really there again.  Although I was never on the starting line, I did get to share in the glory of my college football team, and that made a big difference in how I lived in how I felt about myself.  Those days may be gone, but they do live on through my authentic football jersey.  It really does more to make me happy than any other article of clothing that I own.

This may not be a possibility for many of us, or really for any of us, but through wearing an authentic football jersey, anyone can participate in this fantasy and feel like they are really on the team.  We are all stuck in day jobs that we are not crazy about, and that do not pay us enough money, and so it is really a wonderful piece of escapism to be able to put on an authentic football jersey, turn on the television, and suddenly feel like you are there yourself. 

Honestly, and I know that this may sound strange to say, professional sports are what keep me going day to day and make my life worth living.  All of this is epitomized by the authentic football jersey that I can put on any time I want to play make-believe.

My sister used to work for the American Eagle Outfitters warehouse in our local industrial park. She did not sell American Eagle clothing, but she did work very closely with the clothes. Her job was to unpack boxes that were shipped from the factories that actually manufactured the American Eagle clothing. She also inspected the clothing and sorted the items.

Her job was very interesting and the time moved very quickly for her. One of the major benefits of working for the company was having access to the quarterly American Eagle clothing sale.
